Because of a strong record supporting women’s rights and progressive values NOW PAC is extremely pleased to endorse former Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold (D) in his race against Senator Ron Johnson (R) for the U.S. Senate. Senator Feingold was a strong ally for 18 years, before losing in 2010 during the surge of the Tea Party. His opponent opposes protecting members of the LGBTQIA community from workplace discrimination, wants to give legal rights to unborn children, and voted against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, so he must be replaced.

While in office Senator Russ Feingold was a very active protector of abortion rights. Throughout his 18 years in office he voted against bills requiring that parents be notified if a minor receives an abortion; stopping minors from being able to cross state lines to receive an abortion; restricting money for abortion; and prohibiting military base abortions. Feingold also supported allowing federal funds to go towards providing abortions and allowing emergency contraception in military health facilities.

Additionally Feingold has long been a proponent of sex education and an ally to the LGBTQIA community. Feingold voted for a bill that would have provided $100 million towards reducing the teen pregnancy rate through education and contraceptives and also voted against a bill that provided $75 million for abstinence-only education. As an ally to the LGBTQIA community in 1996 Feingold voted against a bill prohibiting same-sex marriage and voted for a bill to prohibit job discrimination based on sexual orientation. Feingold also supported a bill to add sexual orientation as a protected class in hate crime legislation back in 2000.

With a record like his there is no doubt that former Senator Russ Feingold would be a strong feminist in the Senate.
