Donna Edwards (D-MD, U.S. Senate)

Donna Edwards Profile

Although we will miss Senator Barbara Mikulski’s strong voice in the Senate on behalf of women, NOW PAC is happy to announce our endorsement of Representative Donna Edwards, a stalwart feminist, for election to the United States Senate in the state of Maryland. Edwards, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland’s 4th congressional district, has worked tirelessly her entire career advocating for the rights of women and children.

After a career as a nonprofit public interest advocate, Edwards ran for Congress in 2008 and beat a well-established incumbent. While in the House, Edwards closely worked with Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to launch a new agenda entitled ‘When Women Succeed, America Succeeds: An Economic Agenda for Women and Families,’ that focused their efforts on childcare, work-life balance for busy families, and pay equity. When it comes to equal pay for equal work, Edwards is incredibly passionate about continuing the fight, and in part because of her drive, Edwards’ home district is the exception to the norm of paying women less.

Edwards knows the value of our children and what they can accomplish when they are given the resources to do so, and that is why she has fought for continual funding of STEM programs in some of Maryland’s neediest school districts. When elected to the Senate, Edwards has promised to continue her work with Maryland’s public educators to ready our children for the future.

Edwards was the first ever African American woman to be elected to Congress from the state of Maryland, and her election to the Senate, which currently has no African American woman Senators, would be an important accomplishment in the fight for women’s rights.
