Electing feminists to all levels of public office is a crucial part of NOW’s advocacy for women’s rights. In 1968, two years after the founding of the National Organization for Women, NOW’s membership empowered the organization to engage in electoral politics as part of its work toward achieving true equality for all women.

In 1977, NOW established its national federal Political Action Committee, NOW PAC. In addition, to ensure that feminists get elected to all levels of political office, many NOW chapters and state organizations have created state and local NOW PACs.

NOW PACs endorse candidates and raise money for direct contributions to political candidates or grassroots organizing to get out the feminist vote. NOW PACs field organizers work on campaigns and recruit grassroots volunteers to phone bank, canvas and conduct voter education campaigns. NOW PACs’ strategies of aggressive grassroots organizing, and early support for feminist candidates have been changing the face of those elected to all levels of political officefor more than three decades.
